Overlanding is never about the destination, but always about the journey. If you want soft hotel beds, waiters and dinner surrounded by people, then overlanding is not for you. If you want dusty roads, empty skies, campfires and the untravelled road curling away towards the horizon, then pack your 4×4, pick up your passport and hit the road. Overlanding isn’t a holiday, it’s an adventure.

Expedition Equipment will make sure you are ready for your overlanding adventure

Overlanding is the exploration of far-flung corners of the earth. Most overland expeditions take place in a well-stocked 4×4, though you can use a 2 wheel drive dependent on where you are hoping to get to. Historically the term overlanding comes from Australia, where it referred to the process of driving your stock over vast tracts of land, over a long period of time. Modern day overlanding came into being in the 1940s and 1950s when Len Beadell opened up the Australian outback by building roads.

As the world has become more commercialised, holiday destinations have become increasing popular. The flip side of making the world more accessible for everyone, is that the world has come to be seen as less of an adventure. Overlanding with your Landrover has become a way of escaping the masses and taking you to places beyond where the average traveller can reach. For those who relish independence, overlanding provides the perfect answer. No timetables and no tour guides – you can simply travel as you wish, and go wherever the road may take you.

With the rise in popularity of overlanding, many companies have sprung up which will take you on overland travels along some of the more popular overlanding routes including the Silk route, which traditionally took you from the Mediterranean to Persia, though nowadays refers to routes between Europe and China. Other popular areas to explore include Africa and South America.
